Make and Test a Parachute

The instructor will help the participants construct and test model parachutes from one to three feet in diameter.  The test will involve equipping each parachute with different size small weights, dropping it down a stairwell, and timing the drop.  The instructor will help the participants to plot the drop times on a graph to find a co efficient that may be used to calculate the drop speed for other parachutes with different diameters and weights.  The participants will learn how to analyze experimental data, recognize measurement errors, and use mathematical models based on science to minimize the effect of errors.
